Marvin, I didnt expect for you to understand what I was saying about building a house with inferior products! Maybe someone else here can explain the context of what I wrote at your level of understanding a little  better for you with pictures and pop-ups LOL!

Hey OLD FART,

A pigeon being eaten by a hawk is nature thats how god wanted it. Hawks Eat Pigeons and will continue to thats what they try to do everyday. If i got a sick bird give it to nature. not pop its head throw it away and let it rot..... FOR WHAT?....

And please believe me if i had a newbie around me he would have some.......

And remember im ok with culling, but the reasons are stupid............ this is how u guys sound......... lol

"Oh this bird is rolling, its healthy, but it flies too high so im going to pop its head and through it away" tell me where thats cool BRO.

"uhhhhhh this bird has rough fethers so im going to pop its head and go wash my hands"

Buttercup i understand your logic and its fine

RAUL CARREIRO dude my home is twice as important than my flock. So no dont build my hause with BS materials. but you can build me a coop with that though.....

last words on this topic a life is a life treat it like its yours......... smdh

Buttertup, I am of the opinion that the rolling trait in rollers is most defineitly a genetic flaw that we as breeders try to perpetuate to "our advantage"! You dont see this rolling trait in feral or wild flocks of pigeons, for the sheer fact that even domesticated pigeons that have been let loose, after a few generations will revert back to the wild  type and coloration! Your analogy of Bulldogs and Pekinise  is a perfect example of how we as breeders of rollers compare to what breeders of these dogs are breeding for a "deformity"  !
Marvin even Tonys Rubys produce culls! So do every Thom,Dick and Harrys birds! The only difference is how the breeder chooses what is a cull and what is not! You know the old saying "one mans trash is another mans treasure"
Those who are at the top in any type of animal breeding cull very heavily!  You cant use the old carpenters  advise of measure twice cut once when you wish to have a stud of birds that are competive, backyard fliers or comp! I would not advise anyone to give  or sell thier culls to those who are just starting out either, A cull is a cull regardless of the reason! This unethical practice will only in time frustrate the beginer and cause him/her many years of wasted time! Ive been in the construction industry for as long as  I can remember, would you want be to build your home with inferior pruducts??

To be ripped apart and eaten alive is oh so much better! At least their is no blood on your hands. I can not beleive you honestly think that is a more fitting way to rid yourself of unwanted, sick or inferior birds but it is better then giving them to an unsuspecting newbie.

It has always been a puzzle to me as to whether rolling is a genetic flaw deemed a positive trait, not unlike the many fainting goats 'round our parts.  Perhaps we are breeding in a deliberate flaw and culling out healthy birds lol, but this is just how yer cute lil' bulldog or pekinese was developed hundreds of years ago or more. The reason for culling the birds for me, is that I am afraid if I didn't, within not too many generations, the rolling flaw or gift would be bred out of the bird, reducing the flock to regular street birds. Of course very deep rollers are also culled in the effort to create a balance and strive towards a breed standard of sorts.  This pigeon husbandry is  born out of my own logic not out of fact, but I thought Trammel would at least understand my own reasons for culling. :P  Peace out.

hey tony,

thanx for posting this and i learned alot that i didnt understand before...... i understand hunting of certain animals, but thats to protect human life, if we didnt hunt deer they would take over our back yard in less than five years, thats dangerous to us so yes hunt them to prevent that.

if an animal is born with a birth defect yes cull it..... livestock is culled for human consumption if we didnt none of us would not be as nourished as we are.

Now in our instance i feel that your strain is too good to be culled unless they are born retarded, or defected...... i feel that your culls will be the best birds ive ever had.... but your expectations are higher than mine too im sure...... so between me and you if you personally have a few birds you are going to cull due to any reason other than retard, or some other defect may i please buy them from you or sumthing... im not a breeder i am a flyer (not Competitive) and i like to see all the different colors and sizes of the birds as one big group lovin it, but once i find the good stuff and retire,  then start breeding the good ones in a few years or so..... its like a fish tank but only in the sky i just like to relax an watch.

like i let hawks take my sick birds that way it doesnt go to waste and another animal got a meal... theres a huge field i take them too and release them......

i just dont believe in culling birds for being stubborn, or whatever els......

like i said ill take the ones that may help a beginner like me but the too far gone cull them

once again thanx TONY

Thank you, Tony, for providing this excellent background information for those tender-hearted and un-informed individuals who do not understand the many reasons and benefits of the culling process in animal husbandry and wildlife population management.

Culling And Selective Breeding
« Reply #1 on: December 06, 2011, 01:12:38 pm »
Culling is the process by which an animal is removed from a group due to its lacking certain characteristics or having those that are undesirable. There are several cases in which culling practices are utilized today.

In each instance, however, strict culling guidelines and criteria are implemented. For instance, in the area of livestock, male chicks are culled shortly after being hatched due to their lack of use in egg production. Culling in wildlife occurs with the hunting of certain animals to deal with overpopulation, and is often put into practice when certain species of animals are tested positive for contagious diseases, in order to prevent the spread of disease.

Culling, in the instance of pedigree animals, can also refer to the selective breeding of a species. Certain animals are spayed or neutered if they show undesirable traits for which the breeder does not want passed to its offspring.

In addition, the animals that are more desirable are kept to breed, while those that are not are given away or sold as pets. CLICK HERE TO READ ENTIRE ARTICLE
